When I moved away to college I brought an overwhelming amount of stuff with me. I thought it was a good idea to bring at least a little bit of everything and sometimes even more. However, when I was going back and forth from college to home over the weekends and breaks I noticed I was bringing a lot of stuff back home that I wasn’t using in college.
I live in an apartment off campus and have a little bit more storage space than the typical dorm has. Bringing things that are not essential is something that is important since you are already very limited in space. Besides you definitely don’t want your dorm room or apartment looking cluttered when you have people over!
In this post I tell you exactly what you won’t need in college – from personal experience!
I am a huge shoe girl and am constantly buying new shoes! I thought it was a good idea to bring every pair I owned with me and soon realized there just isn’t enough room! I have shoes that will work for every outfit and every occasion that I could possibly attend. I’m the girl that my roommates ask to borrow shoes from because I have just about everything. The important thing is that I realized I would rather have room for things I needed rather than shoes that wouldn’t get worn.
Go through your shoes while you are packing for college and only pack the ones you know you will need and wear! Think of the events you will attend and bring the best pairs that will fit the occasion!
- WATER BOTTLES
I have SO many reusable water bottles because this is what I prefer to use for my everyday drinks. I brought 7 cups and water bottles with me to college and there is no room for them. I knew I needed one for my tea and one that was used just for water for my everyday use and gym.
I think it’s a good idea to have at least one cheap water bottle and one nice one. If you’re like me and drink a lot of tea then maybe have a cup as well so your water bottles don’t get stained. Here is my favorite water bottle
This water bottle is my favorite because it helps keep track of how much water I am drinking! It comes in many different colors too!
I was freaking out when I was packing my clothes. I had no idea how any of it would fit in a tiny closet. Like shoes, I am constantly online shopping for new clothes. I’ll be honest, I packed enough clothes for myself and 2 other people. I wasn’t sure what I would need and when I’d need it so I brought everything.
There of course was not enough room and I had to part with some clothes. Okay a lot of clothes haha! But it was okay, in fact I was bringing more clothes back home when I could, to make extra room. It’s inevitable that you’re going to go on some type of shopping trip with your friends or even have online shopping nights like we do. If you’re anything like me, you have that favorite pair of jeans, those leggings you wear ALL the time, and that cute pajama set! You have a lot of clothes but there’s pieces that you wear regularly. I would pack all of those items and then only a few from each category that you don’t wear on a regular basis!
This will save you the stress of fitting everything you own in a tiny closet! Try on clothes to make sure you like the material and the way it fits before you pack it!
- DECORATIONS FOR YOUR DESK
My advice for desk decorations is keeping it to a minimum. I love decorating and of course wanted my desk to be cute and match the theme of the rest of my room. However, overdoing it will take the space that you need to work!
I was using my desk everyday, especially because classes were moved online. I knew I needed to get rid of some of the cute Target decorations that I had. My recommendation is using your desk for a while and seeing how much space you have and can fill before buying too much!
When you do have some extra space I recommend getting these small 3 drawer desk top organizers! I store my pens, pencils, highlighters, and sticky notes in mine!
Always try to coordinate with your roommate/s! If there is a lack of communication then you will end up with a ton of duplicates.
Save time and money by finding out what everyone can/is bringing. This will save you so much extra space for other necessities!
- IRON 7 IRONING BOARD
The truth is you will never use an ironing board. If you do, it will be once over a four year period. Don’t bring something that will sit in a closet collecting dust and take up so much extra space. It is so common nowadays to use a hair dryer, a steamer, or pop it in the dryer!
Take away your wrinkles with this steamer!
- ANYTHING FROM HIGHSCHOOL
Trust me when I tell you that you will feel very weird wearing high school clothing around in college. You won’t want to be wearing you high school t shirts around campus because it will make you feel stupid. College is a different phase of your life and you’ll want that fresh beginning!
Instead invest in some new comfortable clothing as well as campus clothing!
You NEED these sweatpants! I love them and think you will too! They are perfect for lounging in your dorm!
If you’re anything like me then overpacking is the norm. You tend to do it when moving, going on vacation, or maybe even just a sleepover. You would rather be over prepared than under prepared. I completely understand! This is why in this post I shared with you from my personal experience the things I didn’t need and could live without!
