I remember packing all of my things up to move into my very first college apartment. The feeling you get when deciding what to pack can become very overwhelming! You’re moving into this new place away from home and have so many new responsibilities. You’re excited because you get to live with roommates that could potentially turn into your lifelong best friends! You are anxious but know that you will now take on so many new adventures! You have a few weeks before moving in and you think oh crap, what in the world do I pack for this so-called “apartment?”
Packing for anything is tough as it is, and now you’re basically packing for a mini “house”. You need all of your personal things but now you also have a kitchen to fill.
In this post you will find all of the necessary kitchen appliances you will need! I created this list to save you the stress of debating on whether or not certain things are essential and worth the money!
- Silverware Set
This is something that I recommend “investing” in. Silverware sets are not super expensive at all! But because you do use silverware several times a day getting a set that is a little bit more durable will be better in the long run! And you definitely won’t have to throw it out at the end of the year!
- Baking Sheets
I put this at the top of the list because this was the one thing that my roommates and I forgot to bring! We have a lot of friend hangouts and that typically leads to us baking some type of dessert and most of the time it happens to be cookies!! We use baking sheets for so many dinners as well this is definitely something you won’t want to forget to pack!
- Pots & Pans
These are a necessity to a kitchen but can be a bit pricey! If the budget is there then I definitely recommend getting this set! If you can’t invest I would recommend asking family members for extra pots and pans and asking what your roommates have as well! Definitely communicate to avoid wasting money on these if you can!
If you want a nice set I like these glass ones however, if you are anything like me and absolutely HATE using anything but plastic because you are clumsy and know you’ll break too many, I linked some great plastic ones as well! And if these still aren’t good enough Target has some really durable, inexpensive plastic ware that I love as well!
I don’t love glass cups either, but for some reason juice tastes SO much better to me in a glass than it does in a plastic cup!! IDK, is that weird!? I love this set for glassware and also linked some plastic cups as well!
- Knife Set
This is SO important to have! Trust me! I remember moving in and my parents sent me with a dull set of knives and I had to replace them within a few weeks because they just weren’t cutting it. Haha, get it 😉
- Cooking Utensils Set
These come in sets which I think is SO much better and more budget friendly than buying everything separately! You’ll use these way more than you thought you would and it’s something you can’t cook without!
- Measuring Cups/Spoons
You’ll soon find out that a lot of things you cook require certain measurements exactly like baking! In my opinion you can never have enough of these! We have several different sets metal and nonmetal in my apartment because for some odd reason they like to disappear often! I also recommend having a glass measuring cup for your liquids!
Having a strainer makes your life so much easier! You take away so many chances of burning yourself by accident when you have the proper kitchen tools! Here are a few different options!
I know when I’m in my apartment I’m on college time which means I definitely didn’t have time to stand in front of the stove toasting bread! Don’t forget to bring a toaster!
- Coffee Maker
If you LOVE coffee as much as I do, you’re going to want to have a dependable coffee machine! I love my Keurig! Here are some options!
- Cutting Boards
These are a must! Don’t ruin your nice dinnerware cutting chicken! Invest in some cutting boards!
- Oven Mitts
These also come in cute matching sets if you choose! You can never have too many! These get dirty often and are always being thrown in the wash so definitely have a few!
- Food Storage Containers
If you like to meal prep then you’re definitely going to need storage containers! I’m not a huge leftover person myself and I know I’m not but there’s some days where I rather have last night’s dinner rather than pizza rolls for the 5th time that week! I use a lot more containers than I thought I would!
- Can Opener
This can be a handheld one or an electric one but having a can opener is very essential! Once again a lot of different foods come in cans and we may not realize it until we don’t have a can opener!
- Hand Mixer
If you want something more than a whisk I recommend a simple handheld mixer! Does not have to be anything expensive but will get the work done and won’t cramp your hand!
- Crock Pot
This will SAVE you! Everyone bashes on crock pot food but hey, I’m all for it! Nothing feels better than having a long busy day in classes and not having time or energy to go cook a meal! Shoot put that stuff in a crock pot baby and you’re good to go!
I HATE the taste of water in my college town! YUCK! I’ve been spoiled with my refrigerated filtered water! Sadly my apartment complex came with a not so fancy refrigerator which meant buying a Brita for that yummy clean tasting water!
- Mixing Bowls
I swore by never needing a mixing bowl in college. What was the difference and why the heck couldn’t I just use a regular bowl.. Well because Emily it’s just not big enough and doesn’t work the same… URG! Buy these you won’t regret it!!!
- Casserole Dishes
I hate that this is the term for these because I am not a casserole gril. In fact the name just grosses me out. Anyways, you will need some type of glass dishes like these for baking BROWNIES of course!! Well and a lot of other foods but I automatically associate these with baking brownies!
- Coffee Mugs
There are 4 of us living in our apartment and only 3 of us like coffee and I think we have 40+ mugs.. No joke… And we run our dishwasher everyday but for some reason we needed so many.. You definitely do NOT need this many unless you have a problem like us lol but you will need them if you like coffee or maybe you’re a hot tea girl or hot chocolate!
- Kitchen Towels
My clumsy roommates and I spill stuff all the time so having too many towels has never been an issue! You will definitely go through more than you think and when you throw the dirty ones in the wash, you’ll want to make sure you have extra!!
- Pantry Storage Containers
These are not a must, they just look pretty and make the organization so much better! If your apartment is anything like ours, it did not come with a pantry.. or even storage space in any of the cabinets for it so we have to buy a metal rack for all of our food. This is just on display for anyone who comes over and so having these definitely helps in making it look a little less cluttered.
This is the exact rack we bought for our “pantry.” It is big enough to hold all of our food but thin enough that it doesn’t take up much extra space at all!
- Kitchen Tools
These are things like a pizza cutter, a cheese grater, and a vegetable peeler. These are essentials in every kitchen that may be easily forgotten!
If you are a tea drinker or like making Kool aid like I do you will want a pitcher other than the one you have for your water! One that over time can get stained but be separated from your everyday use one. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy!
- Paper towel holder
This is probably one of the most forgotten things because it’s not the end all if you don’t have one! If you feel you need one then great, I have 3 so I feel ya!
